There are 19 different veld types found in the Karoo, from succulent mountain scrub to arid Karoo. As a rule of thumb, the Karoo receives less than 250mm of annual rainfall. Nonetheless, flower displays, after even light rains are spectacular, with the rich succulent flora boasting more than 1000 species classified as rare or endangered. The dry earth, seemingly devoid of life, on closer inspection reveals a miniature plant kingdom that comprises more than 7000 of the almost 9000 species of the Cape Floral Kingdom.

Tours at Gecko Rock can be self-guided, at your leisure, making use of the well marked hiking paths or with one of our guides who can point out the various plants and shrubs and offer interesting information on their medicinal uses.

The range of miniature plants present wonderful opportunities for the keen macro photographer.
